Project Description
Located in Ramona, California, Mussey Grade Road is a historic highway dating back to the 1870’s. This remained the main route from Ramona to San Diego for nearly 70 years until State Highway 67 was opened in 1943. Due to its age, the existing slopes were failing, which allowed large rocks and boulders to fall onto the road. In order to alleviate these hazards, improvements were made to ensure roadway safety that included: full depth removal of the roadway shoulders; replacement of aggregate base material and asphalt; new drainage systems; gabion baskets; rock removal and splitting; regrading of the existing slopes, and the installation of a rope anchor wire mesh slope protection system.
